Phrase hints help the learner master the sentence “I want” + a card from a folder. Until the sentence is started with a card from the main screen, folders do not open: tap a folder too early and the sentence starter glows. No taps for a while and whatever comes next glows: the folders, the cards inside a folder, then the play button.

Where to turn them on: three dots → “Settings” → the “Look and behaviour” tab → “Phrase hints”. The switch is shown when a tap adds the card to the phrase (“Add to selected cards”). Next to it is “Hint after, sec.”: how long to wait before a hint, 5 seconds by default. In the Android app, it is in the “Card Behavior” section. A set can also turn hints on just for itself, in its own settings.

When to use them: at step 3 of the path, while the learner is learning to ask “I want” + a card from one folder. Once they build the sentence on their own, without hints, turn them off with the same switch.
