Communicator: cards for non-speaking learners

A complete digital card-exchange communicator. Cards with ARASAAC pictures, 4-stage learning program, AI phrase composition, neural voices. Free local mode without signup.

Card exchange is an alternative communication method: the learner expresses a desire by handing over a picture card. Used in ABA practice worldwide.

Communication learning program — built into the app

Unlike most AAC apps, the platform guides users through the 4 learning stages and suggests what to do at each one. This is what a certified ABA specialist normally teaches during individual sessions.

1
Level 1. Physical card exchange

One card on screen. The learner taps it with physical guidance from an adult. The goal is to link the action 'take the card' with receiving what they want.

2
Level 2. Distance and persistence

The learner picks up the device on their own and taps the card. Distance and independence are gradually increased.

3
Level 3. Discriminating between cards

Choosing between two or more options. Substages 3.1 (desired vs. non-desired), 3.2 (choice between desired), 3.3 (context and unavailable options).

4
Level 4. Sentence structure

Cards are grouped by categories. Compound phrases like 'I want an apple' appear. The platform generates grammatical speech on its own.

Each stage has video tutorials and a step-by-step guide for parents and specialists.

How a card is created

Minimum action by the adult — maximum time for the learner.

1
Type a word

For example, "Apple". The platform immediately searches the ARASAAC library (12,000+ open pictograms designed for AAC) and Unsplash.

2
Pick an image

From the found options or upload your own photo. Real-object photos work well for learners who aren't ready for pictograms yet.

3
Voiceover added automatically

Browser synthesizer — free. Neural voices — if you want natural sound (one tap = 1 token).

4
The card is ready to use

It appears in the communicator. The learner taps — the platform speaks. Then — add to a set, a category, or an active session.

What's inside the communicator

ARASAAC library

12,000+ open pictograms designed for AAC. Free, no watermarks.

AI phrase generation

A neural network assembles selected cards into a grammatical phrase. "I want an apple" — without crude stitching.

Neural voices

Multiple TTS providers to choose from. Natural sound instead of robotic.

Categories and sets

Group cards by topic. Sets for different contexts: "At home", "Outdoors", "Walk".

Tap modes

Speak immediately, or "Add to selected" — for compound phrases.

Card availability

A card is in the set but unavailable right now — for teaching waiting and context.

Group with specialist

One learner — one card set across all adults around them: parents, grandparent, speech therapist.

History and statistics

Which phrases are used most, which categories to expand. Progress chart by learning stage.

We teach the method, not lock you into a tool

You learn the augmentative communication method, not one particular screen. The skill transfers: after learning you can stay with our communicator or switch to any other. No vendor lock-in.

  • The card-exchange method is universal
  • Progress and skill stay with the learner
  • You can switch to any other communicator
  • Or stay with us — whatever suits you

Common questions about the communicator

ARASAAC is an open pictogram library developed specifically for AAC communication by the ARASAAC team in Spain. Over 12,000 images, neutral style, recognizable symbols. Free and without watermarks. The de facto standard for visual communication worldwide.

Yes. Many learners at early stages find real-object photos easier than pictograms. Upload your own — the platform supports any images. As skills develop, switch to ARASAAC pictograms for greater generalization.

In the communicator settings — a slider from 60 to 240 pixels. The setting is local to each device. Smaller cards — more choices on one screen. Larger — for learners with motor difficulties.

Enable the "Add to selected" mode. The learner picks several cards in a row — they go into the top strip. When ready — the learner taps the strip and the platform speaks the phrase. With AI phrases, this is grammatical speech ("I want a red apple"); without AI, simple stitching ("I want apple").

There is no direct import yet. You can create cards manually with the same names. If you have a large collection — contact support, we will help migrate.

That's normal at the start. The platform offers a first-stage learning program: one card, physical guidance, immediate reward. A video tutorial is in the help section. Don't rush — every learner has their own pace.

Yes. Local mode is a full PWA, works offline. ARASAAC search, card creation, browser voiceover — everything is available without internet. AI phrases and neural voices require internet (these are external APIs).
