New: smartwatch app

Talking cards — right on your wrist

The phone is in the bag, but something needs saying now. With TalkAndLearn on a smartwatch, a phrase takes two or three taps and is spoken aloud in a neural voice. The same cards as on the tablet and phone — nothing to set up again.

  • Wear OS smartwatches
  • Same card set as on the tablet
  • Updates itself

Tablet first, then on the go

A smartwatch does not replace the main communicator. Card-based communication is learned on a big screen; once phrases are familiar, they can come along — on a phone or on the wrist.

Core

1. Tablet

This is where learning happens: a big screen, large cards, the whole vocabulary. The instructor (parent, teacher, specialist) leads sessions along the communication path.

Optional

2. Smartphone

The same communicator always at hand: on a walk, in a shop, visiting friends. Cards and settings are shared with the tablet.

Optional

3. Smartwatch

The most frequent phrases on the wrist. No need to take out the phone: raise the hand, two taps — the phrase is spoken.

How it works

The smartwatch shows one of the group’s card sets. Everything set up on the tablet, phone or web version arrives on the smartwatch by itself.

A phrase in two or three taps

A tapped card goes into the phrase strip at the top. Tap the strip — the phrase is spoken. Swipe it left — it is cleared.

“What’s next” suggestions

After the first card, the smartwatch shows what usually comes next, based on the group’s phrases over the last month. Inside folders, everything is visible.

Quick answers

“Yes”, “No”, “Help” are spoken right away when the card has “play immediately” turned on.

The group’s voice

The phrase sounds in the same neural voice as on the tablet and phone — from the smartwatch speaker.

Speaks offline too

The last card set and pictures are stored on the smartwatch. Without a connection, the phrase is put together from saved card recordings.

Messages to family

Every phrase goes to the group history and, if connected, to Telegram — family can see what the user said.

Which smartwatches work

Works: Wear OS 3 and newer

  • Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 and newer, including Classic, FE and Ultra
  • Google Pixel Watch
  • Other smartwatches on Wear OS 3 and newer

Does not work

  • Apple Watch
  • Huawei, Amazfit, Garmin and fitness bands — they run their own system, not Wear OS
  • Kids’ smartwatches with a SIM card

What else you need

  • An Android phone paired with the smartwatch — TalkAndLearn is installed from it
  • The Pro plan: a cloud group the smartwatch takes its card set from
  • Internet on the smartwatch: via the phone, home Wi-Fi or mobile data (LTE)

How to install

About 10 minutes, once. The TalkAndLearn phone app does the install — no app store or third-party tools needed.

  1. 1

    Install TalkAndLearn on the phone

Use the version from the website — it has the smartwatch install button. Sign in to an account with the Pro plan.

  2. 2

    One home network

The phone and smartwatch on the same home Wi-Fi, not a guest network. Turn off VPN on the phone during the install.

  3. 3

    Developer mode on the smartwatch

Settings → About watch → Software information → tap “Software version” seven times. “Developer options” appears in settings.

  4. 4

    Wireless debugging

Settings → Developer options: turn on “ADB debugging” and “Wireless debugging”, then “Pair new device”. A 6-digit code appears on the smartwatch — keep that screen open.

  5. 5

    The button on the phone

In TalkAndLearn on the phone: Settings → Smartwatch → “Install on smartwatch” → enter the 6 digits. In 10–20 seconds TalkAndLearn opens on the smartwatch, already signed in. Just pick a card set.

  6. 6

    Turn debugging off

On the smartwatch, turn off “Wireless debugging” and “ADB debugging”. TalkAndLearn stays and keeps working.

Updates and signing in again

The smartwatch installs new versions by itself while the app is off screen. If it gets signed out, a code appears on the smartwatch: on the phone open Settings → Smartwatch → “Connect smartwatch” and enter it.

Didn’t work?

The usual culprits are a guest network, VPN on the phone, or the smartwatch screen going to sleep — the code lives only while the screen is open. Write at the bottom of the page — the install can be done together over a video call.

Frequently asked questions

For the install — yes, an Android phone. After that the smartwatch works on its own: via the phone, home Wi-Fi or mobile data if the smartwatch has a SIM card.

You can, but learning card-based communication is easier on a big screen: a smartwatch shows four cards at a time. The smartwatch is best for phrases that are already familiar.

On the tablet, phone or web version — in the card set selected on the smartwatch. The smartwatch picks up changes every time it opens and with the “Refresh” button.

The smartwatch app is free and works with the Pro plan.

Not yet: the app is built for Wear OS, and Wear OS smartwatches pair only with Android phones.

The smartwatch speaker is quieter than a phone. Indoors the phrase is heard well; on a noisy street it helps to raise the hand closer to the listener.
