Step 7

Move on to the message feed

The first step from separate requests to a conversation: the learner gets their own feed of what was said.

Why this matters

While the learner uses only the communicator, every phrase lives for a second and disappears. In the "My feed and communicator" mode everything they have said stays on the screen, just like a chat history for speaking people. The learner sees their messages, recognises them, and can tap a phrase to say it again without assembling it from scratch. This is a transitional level: the learner's speech moves to the familiar place — a feed — but there is no conversation partner in it yet, and nothing new needs to be requested.

How to introduce

  1. 1Turn on the "My feed and communicator" mode in the group settings. The communicator stays the same; a feed of what was said is added to it.
  2. 2At first simply show the feed after each phrase: "look, you said it — here it is".
  3. 3Teach repeating a phrase by tapping it in the feed — that is the quickest way to show what the feed is for.
  4. 4Do not change the vocabulary at the same time: this step is about a new place for speech, not about new requests.

How to advance

Once the learner looks at the feed on their own and repeats phrases from it, add a second participant — move on to dialogue.

Next goal: Move on to dialogue

Common mistakes

  • Turning on the feed while requests are not working yet: there must first be something to collect in it.
  • Changing everything at once — the mode, the vocabulary and the people around. Change one thing at a time.
  • Demanding "correct" long phrases. At this step what matters is that what was said is kept and can be repeated.

Examples

  • The learner assembled "I want water", the phrase went into the feed; half an hour later they tapped it there and asked again.
  • An adult scrolls the feed together with the learner: "in the morning you asked for a cartoon, then for a walk".
